Dallaglio: We were second best
12 June 2004, 4:03 pm
England captain Lawrence Dallaglio dusted himself down from a 36-3 drubbing against the All Blacks and admitted: "There are no excuses."
England crashed to their heaviest defeat since New Zealand beat them 64-22 on the same ground six years ago.

This is very disappointing for all of us, said number eight Dallaglio.

We talked about the importance of first-up tackles. We missed six in the whole game against New Zealand in Wellington last year, but we missed six from the kick-off.

If you are going to miss them at that rate, then you are going to make life incredibly difficult. Whenever New Zealand got a sniff of quick ball, they moved it wide and took their opportunities.

In most areas, we came second best. When you lose 36-3, it is easy to say you are tired, but there are no excuses.

England head coach Sir Clive Woodward now faces a considerable challenge in picking up his players.

We have got to front up, look in the mirror, re-group and try and play better next Saturday, Woodward said.

We looked very slow and lethargic - we were a yard slower than the team in black.

We looked tired, and we were not our usual selves, but New Zealand played very well. It is not my role to make excuses. We lost fair and square, and we made errors that we don't normally do.

The game was over at half-time (England trailed 30-3) but at least we have another game next weekend to look forward to. It is a big challenge to bounce back, and we have to make sure we get a fresh team out.

I will take my time and not over-react, but you cannot win Test matches if you don't win your line-out ball and you drop off tackles.

For new All Blacks coach Graham Henry it was a dream start, together with his assistants Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith.

We didn't think there would be much of a difference on the scoreboard, but I was delighted with the set-piece, it was outstanding, especially the line-outs.

I haven't thought about next week yet, but England are world champions, and they will come back very strongly.

England will be disappointed. I think some of their guys are looking forward to their break, but they have achieved a hell of a lot, and you get better through those type of experiences they had.
