Scotland finally ended their eight-month wait for a Test victory with a strong second-half performance against Samoa in Wellington.
After a cagey first 40 minutes Scotland led just 11-3 but secured coach Matt Williams his first taste of Test success when Ben Hinshelwood, Ally Hogg, Simon Webster and Mike Blair all added to Gordon Ross opening try.
Scotland trailed after Roger Warrens fifth-minute penalty but slowly turned the screw and moved ahead just before the half-hour when Chris Paterson, who finished with 13 points, landed his second of three penalties.
From then on Scotlands disciplined defence allowed Samoa few opportunities and they played out the last 75 minutes without conceding a point to seal their first Test victory since the World Cup.
In the meantime Scotland claimed the RBS 6 Nations wooden spoon with five straight defeats but Williams has placed the emphasis firmly on development and was delighted to hand impressive Glasgow winger Sean Lamont his debut cap.
Ross reclaimed the fly-half role and Hinshelwood started in the centres after promising 20-year-old Tom Philip ruptured knee ligaments in training.
The Samoans, fresh from a 24-14 victory over Tonga last weekend, were captained by former Borders number eight Semo Sititi, who scored a try against Scotland in the 1999 World Cup.
The two sides had met four times before this match with Samoas best result a 15-15 draw at Murrayfield in 1995 - and so it remains.
