Dearlove gets Scotland call
1 June 2004, 8:05 am
Matt Williams has been forced to call uncapped loose forward Paul Dearlove off his summer holidays and straight into Scotland's 22-man squad for Tuesday's game against NSW Country after Cameron Mather's tour was ended by a twisted ankle.
Scotlands doctor James Robson confirmed Mather, who sustained the injury against Queensland last Saturday, would not recover in time to play in Fridays Test match against Samoa and he left for home on Monday night.

With Scotland facing two games in 48 hours, Williams needed to react swiftly.

Versatile loose forward Dearlove, who moved to Glasgow last year after failing to break into the ACT Brumbies Super 12 squad, happened to be on holiday in Sydney and was happy to answer Scotlands SOS.

I was surprised to get the call but I am delighted to be able to join the squad, he said.

I will certainly do my very best to make the most of this opportunity. The chance to pull on the jersey and represent Scotland really means so much to me and it is one I will certainly not take lightly.

Hopefully I will be able to get on in the game and get the chance to show what I can do on the pitch.

Dearlove was in Australias squad at the 2000 SANZAR Under-21 Tournament in Auckland and has also represented the Australian Barbarians.

But the 25-year-old turned down the chance to play for the Australian Sevens team because he did not want to prejudice his eligibility for both Scotland and South Africa.

We needed a replacement for Cammy at short notice and it was fortuitous that Paul was on holiday in Sydney, said Williams.

We made contact with him and he has now joined the squad for the NSW Country game.

We hoped Cammy would recover sufficiently to take part in further tour games but after an assessment it was deemed that the injury was more severe than first thought and regrettably, Cammy had to return home.

Mather is the third member of the original 40-man squad who congregated on the Gold Coast last week to be ruled out of the tour.

Prop Euan Murray was forced to fly home without playing a game after failing to shake a thigh injury and has been replaced by 28-year-old Rotherham tighthead Colin Noon, also amongst the replacements for the NSW Country game.

Fullback Robbie Kydd suffered a fractured cheekbone 20 minutes into his Scotland debut against Queensland and was undergoing an operation on Tuesay to have a plate inserted just below his right eye.

Scrum-half Mike Blair suffered a stinger during the Queensland game and was replaced at half-time by Graeme Beveridge, who will start against NSW Country.

Williams has reshuffled his side, making a total of nine changes in personnel to the starting XV that was thumped 41-5 by Queensland.

Dan Parks takes over at fly-half and Simon Danielli gets a run on the wing in a side captained by number eight John Petrie.

Scotland team to play NSW Country in Wollongong: G Morton; S Danielli, M Di Rollo, G Morrison, H Southwell; D Parks, G Beveridge; A Jacobsen, S Scott, J Brannigan, C Hamilton, S MacLeod, A Hall, S Gray, J Petrie (captain).

Replacements: R Russell, C Noon, A Kellock, P Dearlove, M Blair, S Cranston, B Hinshelwood.
