Back and Leonard join Barbarians
17 May 2004, 12:35 pm
Two of England's triumphant World Cup squad have been selected for the Barbarians' tour of Britain.
Veterans Neil Back and Jason Leonard - both retired from Test rugby - have won places among the forwards, although both players' appearance for the invitational side is subject to club commitments.

Leonard will feature in Harlequins' Parker Pen Challenge Cup final against Montferrand on Saturday - the day of the opening tour match against Scotland - and could also be involved in the English Premiership Wildcard competition a week later.

Back might also be required for the Wildcard final on May 29 if unfavourable results during the weekend's European finals mean Leicester need to take their place at Twickenham.

There are no English internationals among the backs - London Irish winger Paul Sackey appears as one of three uncapped players - but there is plenty of firepower from elsewhere in the world.

Irish skipper and British Lions centre Brian O'Driscoll is one of the brightest stars in the game and he is joined in the backs by his fellow Triple Crown winners Geordan Murphy, Shane Horgan and David Humphreys.

Former New Zealand sensation Christian Cullen - who joined Munster after being passed over for the All Blacks' World Cup squad last year - is also included alongside Kiwi threequarters Bruce Reihana and Mark Robinson.

The Barbarians' squad boasts 1,317 caps with the forwards providing much of that experience - Back and Leonard have amassed a combined total of 180 Test appearances alone - and a host of former international captains.

Back must fight it out with France's Olivier Magne and Italian back rower Aaron Persico for the number seven jersey while Taine Randell and Bobby Skinstad will compete for the number eight duties.

New Zealanders Josh Blackie and Matt Sexton are the two remaining uncapped players - it is Barbarians tradition to include one non-international in every starting line-up - while former Australia boss Bob Dwyer will coach the side once again.

The tour opens at Murrayfield on Sunday and then moves to Ashton Gate in Bristol for a clash with Wales on May 26 before concluding against England at Twickenham the following Sunday.
