Burke joins Munster
20 April 2004, 12:17 pm
Harlequins fly-half Paul Burke has agreed a two-year contract with Munster.
Burke has scored more than 1,000 points for Quins during the past four seasons, but the Irish international will now return to the team where he started playing top-flight rugby before spells at Bristol, Cardiff and Quins.

I am really delighted to be going back to Munster. They have become one of the truly great sides in Europe, said Burke, ahead of his summer move.

They have great ambition, and I hope that I can bring the experience Ive gained playing over here (England) to help them achieve their goals. I would say there were not many sides that could tempt me away from Harlequins.

They (Harlequins) have been very supportive of my move, and I appreciate their understanding my reasons for leaving. I wish them all the very best in the future. Who knows? Maybe well meet in the European Cup next season.

Its really a fantastic challenge and a great opportunity for me. I still have a burning ambition to play for Ireland, and playing with a side like Munster will help me in that regard, 30-year-old Burke told www.munsterrugby.ie.

Munster coach Alan Gaffney added: We are always looking to strengthen our squad, and Paul Burke is the type of player we need to compete at the highest level.

He is vastly experienced, and his inclusion in the squad gives us depth in a crucial position. I am delighted to have Paul on board.

Burke, who will contest Munsters number 10 jersey with Ronan OGara, made his Test debut against England in 1995, and has won 13 caps.
