Pelous calls for calm
25 March 2004, 7:13 pm
France captain Fabien Pelous has urged his side to treat this weekend's clash with England like any other game even though victory would see them clinch the RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam.
Les Bleus are favourites to win the much-coveted trophy after defeating Ireland, Italy, Wales and Scotland, while Englands defeat to Ireland on March 6 has left the defending champions with an uphill struggle.

But Pelous, who is looking to win the fourth Grand Slam of his career, does not want to get carried away.

"Every match is different, this one is a normal one, the lock stressed. We just have to win it."

France were beaten by Sir Clive Woodwards men in the semi-finals of the World Cup last November, before England went on to win the competition.

However, Pelous claims he is not looking for revenge for the defeat nor does he feel any added pressure to win in front of their home crowd.

"I don't feel under pressure, I don't feel stressed or anxious," he continued.

"The most important thing is what happens on the pitch on Saturday. We have to prepare for that match as usual.

"We pay particular attention to the young players, we don't want them to feel disturbed or stressed because of the clash.

"They have to use it as another way of motivating themselves."

Pelous admits he has been impressed by the French team during the 2004 tournament after they managed to bounce back from a disappointing fourth-place finish in the World Cup.

"I love this team because it wins," he said.

"And victory is most important. Things become easy and light when you win.

"If we can also add some impressive actions and style for the public, then that's even better.

But he insists the side are not perfect yet.

"We are not yet excellent in every sector of the game," he said.

"We are very efficient as we showed in our 31-0 win over Scotland last weekend.

"But we have to improve our efficiency in attack while keeping our iron defence the way it is."
