Saviozzi surprised at call-up
23 March 2004, 7:44 pm
Hooker Stefano Saviozzi admits he was shocked to get a call-up as a potential replacement for Fabio Ongaro for Italy's final RBS 6 Nations match with Wales.
Saviozzi told www.federugby.it: At the beginning I was shocked even if I had always been waiting for a phone call from (Italy coach) John Kirwan.

But it was close to the last game of the RBS 6 Nations and I thought it wasn't possible.

When I received the call I thought it was a joke but straight away I recognised the voice of John Kirwan and now I'm full of enthusiasm and happiness.

Saviozzis international career was put on hold two years ago just after the Azzurri had qualified for the World Cup by beating Spain.

Sadly I broke my knee and after the operation I got fit very quickly and I came back to play in April 2003, said Saviozzi.

I hoped for a call to the World Cup in Australia but a different choice was made - there were other players maybe in better condition than me.

I was disappointed but I kept going in the hope that I would get another chance.

Against Wales, Italy will be hunting what would be their first ever win away from Rome in the tournament while, following their win against Scotland, it would also be the first time they have won two games in a single season.

Saviozzi added: I had no problems staying in this group.

I know everybody here, they are all friends. I have watched all the games that Italy have played. Their character was good in every game and especially in defence.

For the game against Scotland I was in the stands and I was overjoyed with the victory. I felt like I was on the pitch together with my team-mates.
