Tindall: Let's spoil French party
22 March 2004, 9:28 am
Mike Tindall has challenged England to spoil the French party in this weekend's RBS 6 Nations title showdown.
But the odds are stacked against Tindall and his team-mates as they target a win that would wreck Gallic Grand Slam hopes.

To retain their RBS 6 Nations crown, England must triumph by a minimum seven-point margin and stay ahead on overall try count - which currently stands at 15-12 in the world champions favour.

An eight-point winning margin or more - something England have not achieved in Paris since 1992 - means they will be guaranteed the championship for a second successive season unless Triple Crown-chasing Ireland smash Scotland at Lansdowne Road by something like 50 points.

But if England lose, draw or triumph by less than seven points, then France are champions.

It is a tall order for England, to say the least; yet they will travel in confident mood after getting their chariot back on track with a 31-21 Twickenham success against Wales.

Two Ben Cohen tries and a late Joe Worsley touchdown, plus 16 points from the boot of young fly-half Olly Barkley, ensured England kept alive their title chances.

Wales threatened an upset when they led 21-16 midway through the second period - full-back Gareth Thomas and centre Mark Taylor claimed impressive touchdowns - before England rallied.

After the second Welsh try, we had a word with each other. We were kicking the ball away willy-nilly, and there was no structure to our game, said Bath centre Tindall.

Teams arent stupid - they are finding ways of breaking down defences. We were in a tight spot again and we didnt play the rugby we wanted to play.

It is a massive challenge going to Paris, but weve still got a chance of winning the tournament. We have just got to try and spoil their party.
