Scotland coach Matt Williams insists his players have to stop conceding needless penalties in crucial areas.
Williams has urged his players to get it right or they have no chance of beating France in their penultimate RBS 6 Nations Championship game at Murrayfield.
The Scots have so far lost their first three matches to Wales, England and Italy.
Williams is happy with the improvement in his players discipline in this campaign but knows any mistakes will be punished heavily.
He said: Weve cut down on the penalties weve been giving away dramatically but the majority of those that we have been giving away have been within kicking distance.
There was a couple of mysterious ones awarded against us a few games back but the majority have been valid.
Were joining the ruck from the wrong side and were not rolling away off our tackles - all within kicking distance.
We gave away nine penalties in our last game against Italy and thats great because we need to keep them in single figures.
Against England it was down to six. Thats world class and Im delighted with our discipline but within 30 metres of our try line we have to trust our systems and just keep our discipline because our defence is now holding out better than it was.
We cant give cheap points, weve got to make teams bleed for every point.
If we go out and give the French five or six penalties within kicking distance, theyll kick the lot of them and youll be 30 points down when you havent really done a lot wrong.
So you have to have that discipline right through the game.
Williams is also happy with his sides general fitness but the Scots coach claims a little more pace and power is needed to take on the worlds best sides.
He said: Were coping for 80 minutes now and were scoring tries in the last few minutes of games but were behind other nations in power and that certainly comes out at the breakdown.
I thought we were very static in our phase play, receiving the ball before we started to run rather than having venom in our run.
We have to go straight at teams in international rugby and support the ball carrier and we simply didnt do that against the Italians.
