O'Driscoll revels in underdog tag
3 March 2004, 4:21 pm
Ireland skipper Brian O'Driscoll is delighted Saturday's RBS 6 Nations clash with England has been labelled a damage limitation exercise and insists his side revel in their role as underdogs.
Few are expecting Eddie OSullivans men to halt Englands procession to a second successive Grand Slam title when they run out at Twickenham, a ground where the Irish have registered just one victory in the past 22 years.

They are sure to provide stiffer opposition than Italy or Scotland, sides already routed by the world champions despite showing plenty of courage, but should still find themselves overpowered in convincing fashion.

However, ODriscoll is confident the form book will count in Irelands favour as they look to become the first team to storm fortress Twickenham in a Test match since the All Blacks in 1999.

Our motivation is to become the first team to beat the world champions and also to stop their exceptional run at Twickenham - there are two excellent reasons to go over to England and give it our all, said ODriscoll.

No-one is giving us a fighting chance so all the pressure is on them. People believe our job is to keep the scoreline as low as possible and that usually works in our favour because the Irish have always done better when underdogs.

Im sure they will be itching to play their first full international at Twickenham since the World Cup. They play with a huge amount of confidence there so we expect them to up their performance on the Italy and Scotland games.

Our job is to get in their faces and not let them play. They love to control games and that starts in the front five, so well have to target them up front.
