The Leinster full-back started all five of Ireland’s matches but he had barely played for Leinster prior to that with a back injury limiting his game time.
Since then he has done enough to convince Lions head coach Warren Gatland he is worth a place on the tour to Australia but by his own admission he is yet to hit his straps.
“It is a difficult one, I had only played three games before the Six Nations,” he told the Irish Independent. “That was a difficult time, our team was constantly on the back foot, we were playing poorly and the weather was horrific. It is very hard to impose yourself on those games.
“The weather started to pick up after that and maybe you get a fraction more ball, but obviously I am not hitting the same heights as last year in terms of maybe hitting 50-metre drop-goals and making 40 or 50-metre breaks up the field to set up tries.
“But I am determined not to force that and I've always said that the one thing that I look for in every game, and the coaches do too, is error free games.”
