Cusiter targets England
15 February 2004, 11:02 am
Chris Cusiter wants Scotland to rouse themselves after their RBS 6 Nations opening defeat to Wales in their Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield.
Cusiter believes Matt Williams new-look side will be better prepared to face Sir Clive Woodwards team following the 23-10 reverse in Cardiff.

"England are a great team but when you play a great team then you raise your own game, so hopefully we will do that, said the Borders scrum-half.

If I am involved then it will be a brilliant experience because its not every day we can play against the world champions in Scotland.

Playing at home will help us and the fact that we have had one game under Matt now will also help and the patterns he wants us to play should be a lot more evident against England.

Scotland competed well up front but could not convert their periods of pressure on the Welsh line into a try until well into injury time when back-row forward Simon Taylor burrowed his way over.

We needed the try earlier, said Cusiter, who showed his potential with one sizzling break after he had got used to the speed of Test rugby.

We got into the game in the second half but just couldnt score any tries and they defended really well.

Wales put us under a lot of pressure in the first 20 minutes and I just could not get into the pace of the game. I felt a lot better once I had 40 minutes under my belt.

We werent surprised by the way Wales played because wed seen what they did in the World Cup and knew their game plan would be to throw the ball wide.

But before we knew it theyd scored a couple of tries and it was difficult to come back from that.
