Laidlaw and Weir catch the eye

Scotland's new head coach Scott Johnson will have been an eagle-eyed viewer of Glasgow Warriors' clash against Edinburgh - and pleased with the composure of his potential half-back pairing.
Edinburgh’s Greig Laidlaw was impressive in defeat, the Scottish scrum-half kicking three penalties and galvanising his troops in the second half.

His possible partner at ten for this year’s RBS 6 Nations, Duncan Weir, though came off the bench to kick two of his own to secure a 23-14 victory for the Warriors.

But 27-year-old Laidlaw hopes to come out on top in the return fixture on December 29.

“We've got to repeat our second-half performance,” he said. "If we play like that, we'll not be far away.

"But, credit to Glasgow, they stuck in and scored a few nice tries in the first half.

"That's the most disappointing thing, the first half. That's what cost us the game.

"We just got on the front foot a little bit. We stopped their blockers running into our defensive line.

"I was disappointed at how we dealt with that in the first half."

In the Welsh derby on Friday Aaron Shingler put in a man-of-the-match display for Scarlets to remind Rob Howley of his credentials ahead of this spring.

Shingler, who made his debut in the RBS 6 Nations against Scotland earlier this year, was the pivotal figure in Scarlets’ 9-6 victory over Cardiff Blues on Friday.

And Fergus McFadden, who has 16 caps for Ireland, crossed for Leinster but it was in vain as they fell to a 27-19 defeat to rivals Munster.
