And despite having joined Robinson for the three autumn Test defeats, including the home loss to Tonga in Aberdeen, Johnson revealed that he would be keen to try to get Scotland back on track.

He said: “If we [Johnson and the SRU] decide my position in the right manner and the appropriate way then I’ll definitely look at it.

“But my position is really clear. I’ve told the board that I’ll see them, we’ll sit down and discuss it man to man and we’ll decide what’s in the best interest of Scotland.

“I came here with a good intention to work with a guy who I like and he has now not got a job so I'm in a fortunate position to still have mine.

“We’ve been around the traps enough to know he’s not going to be the first or the last that it happens to, so that’s from a professional point of view.

“From the human angle, he’s a good friend of mine and although it is a professional game you have to understand the human side.

“I think you would feel disappointed for anyone who loses their job wouldn’t you. So the reality is that you feel for a good man and a good rugby person.”

Scotland endured a difficult 2012, losing every game of the RBS 6 Nations, however after going unbeaten on their summer tour of Australia, Fiji and Samoa things were looking up.

After encouraging performances against New Zealand and South Africa they fell to a disappointing loss against Tonga – leading to Robinson’s decision to step down.

Despite that, Johnson insists the focus must be on looking forward with next year’s Six Nations and the 2015 World Cup.

He added: “The fact is that three years [until the World Cup] is a long time and we need to sort things out at home before we go any further. 

“We can sit here and tell everyone how wrong Scottish rugby is or how hard it is but the reality is that there are some good things.

“There are a lot of good rugby players and good rugby people in Scotland and so it’s about time we focused on the good rather than the things to our detriment.”
