Jonny Sexton succeeded where Ronan O'Gara failed this weekend as the perennial race for the Ireland fly-half jersey gathered pace ahead of the autumn internationals and next year's RBS 6 Nations.

Ulster downed O’Gara’s Munster by just a point at Ravenhill on Friday despite the visitors going through numerous phases in an attempt to set up the veteran fly-half for the kind of drop goal he has become famous for.

But Ulster held firm, ensuring Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris enjoyed a successful 100th appearance for his side.

But while O’Gara did not manage to steal the plaudits, Sexton dropped a dramatic late goal to secure a 19-18 victory away to Treviso as European champions Leinster grabbed their second win of the season on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Wales’ 20-year-old flyer George North was in imperious form, scoring his fourth try of the season and making another – one of two for 18-year-old Jordan Williams – as Scarlets came from behind to retake their place at the top of the table with victory over Connacht.

And North’s international partner in crime Alex Cuthbert was also on the scoreboard as Cardiff Blues finally ended their Welsh hoodoo, claiming only their second win in 12 against opposition from the Principality – this time Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday.
