Matt Stevens admits it was a very tough decision after announcing his retirement from international rugby bringing a 44-cap Test career to an end.
The Saracens prop, whose last cap for England came in the RBS 6 Nations win over Ireland in March, was part of two separate Rugby World Cup campaigns.

In a statement today, the 29 year-old said: “This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make.

“Playing for England has been the ultimate honour and I have been very privileged to wear the white shirt and play with some great players.

“I believe in England are heading in the right direction towards 2015 under Stuart, Graham (Rowntree) and Andy (Farrell) and I remain a huge supporter of what they are doing.

“But I have a young family and, conscious that I would not be able to commit to the World Cup in three years, I have decided to call it a day.

“I will now focus on my rugby at Saracens.”

Stuart Lancaster added: “On behalf of England Rugby I would like to thank Matt for his contribution over the years.

“He should look back on his career with pride and I am sure he will continue to be successful with Saracens and beyond.”
