Laidlaw, a scrum-half by trade, was thrown the Scottish number ten jersey when Dan Parks retired from international rugby after Scotland lost to England 13-6 in this year’s RBS 6 Nations.

The switch also happened at club level and with a number ten jersey on his back, he kick-started Edinburgh’s Heineken Cup-run to the semi-finals.

The 26-year-old starred in the role against Toulouse at Murrayfield, scoring 14 points in a 19-14 win.

While Laidlaw insists he still has a lot to offer from scrum-half, he also admits that as long as he’s gets to pull on a Scottish shirt, he’s happy in either role.

“As long as I have one of them (half-back jerseys) I’m not bothered,” Laidlaw told the Scotsman.

“I just want to play for Scotland and my form has to be good for Edinburgh, whatever that position is.

“I don’t have the answer at the minute, I still stick to my guns and say I feel able to play in both positions.

“Ultimately, Michael (Bradley, Edinburgh head coach) is looking at me as a stand-off this season, which is fine, but I will be asking him for some run-outs at number nine as well.

“It’s something I have thought about and I don’t know how it will go down but I will be round to his office gently reminding him that I can play nine.”
