Foden try in vain as Red Rose wilts in South Africa

Ben Foden had the final word but it was South Africa who had the last laugh as they overcame England in Durban to win 22-17.
The game was a tight affair in the first half as the sides went into the interval locked at 6-6, Owen Farrell and Morne Steyn trading penalties.

However, after the break Steyn and Jean de Villiers crossed for tries to hand new coach Heyneke Meyer victory in his first game in charge, despite Foden’s late score, his first try since touching down against France in this year’s RBS 6 Nations.

Elsewhere, wing George North’s tour of Australia has been thrown into question after limping off in Wales’ defeat in Brisbane.

After the Wallabies raced into a 20-6 lead, a try by wing Alex Cuthbert and the boot of Leigh Halfpenny brought the Welsh back to within a point of their hosts.

However Pat McCabe ensured Wales suffered defeat in their first Test, the final score 27-19, although North limping off with a knee injury after just half an hour is likely to occupy minds as well.

And North isn’t the only fitness concern for Wales with centre Scott Williams also being forced off with injury, this time a clash of heads ending his game, Ashley Beck coming on as his replacement for his first cap.

Meanwhile, Fergus McFadden crossed for an Ireland try against New Zealand but he was outshone by Julian Savea, the young All Black touching down for a hat-trick on his Test debut.

Two Savea efforts and the boot of Dan Carter had New Zealand 23-3 ahead at the interval, before the debutant completed his treble after the restart.

McFadden then broke away for Ireland’s solitary try only for Adam Thompson and Conrad Smith to cross for New Zealand to seal an emphatic 42-10 victory.
