Robbie Deans suffered defeat as Australia coach against Scotland at Murrayfield in 2009

Deans wary of Scotland threat

Australia coach Robbie Deans maintains Scotland will be afforded maximum respect by the Wallabies despite a nightmare RBS 6 Nations campaign.

Andy Robinson’s men went into the Championship full of hope but were left with nothing to show for their efforts after being whitewashed.

Things do not get any easier for Scotland whose Southern Hemisphere tour includes matches against the Wallabies, Samoa and Fiji.

Even without the majority of Waratahs and Brumbies players, Australia will still start as favourites but the 9-8 defeat at Murrayfield – which brought a 27-year winning run to an end – in 2009 is still in Deans’ memory.

“While Scotland are coming off a disappointing Six Nations, they are a team who have traditionally punched above their weight internationally, especially when under-rated,” he said.

“We experienced that three years ago in Edinburgh [when Scotland won 9-8] and will not be taking for granted the threat that they pose.

“For us, it’s going to be great to be playing a Test at home again after having limited opportunities last year [due to the World Cup]. It’s also exciting to be playing in Newcastle, where the Wallabies haven’t appeared before. I’ve spent a bit of time in the city this year and the excitement of the local community to be hosting this match is clear.”
