Brown is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Stuart Hogg by forcing his way into Scotland's starting XV

Brown relishing Scotland opportunity

Scotland new boy Tom Brown admits a vanguard of young players can help re-introduce the feelgood factor into Andy Robinson's team after a disappointing RBS 6 Nations campaign.

Robinson’s squad to tour the Southern Hemisphere has a youthful feel to it with Brown included alongside the likes of Stuart Hogg, Lee Jones and David Denton who all made their breakthrough in the 2012 RBS 6 Nations.

Despite the positives garnered by their performances, Scottish rugby still hit a low point after being whitewashed.

But Brown, who took over from Scotland’s all time leading scorer and caps holder Chris Paterson in the Edinburgh full-back berth, says the new generation are undaunted by past failings.

He said: “I’m hopefully pushing for the 15 jersey, but I think it’s an exciting time for Scottish rugby with guys like Stuart Hogg, Lee Jones, David Denton, Matt Scott and others.

“I’m happy to be another one of those young boys pushing for spaces. Andy Robinson said that when I go out there I should just go for it and not shy away. That’s what I want to do – really make an impact.

“As you grow up you always think that a Scotland cap is so far in the distance but seeing the boys come through this year has been great for Scottish rugby and it does make you realise just how close it is.

“Stuart Hogg has had a great season and done really well. He got his opportunity early on and he took it, which was brilliant for him. For me, it was a fight to get into the Edinburgh starting XV but, by the end of the season, I had kind of claimed that 15 jersey and played in the Heineken quarter and semi-finals.”
