O'Connell absence leaves Munster high and dry

The absence of Ireland skipper Paul O'Connell proved crucial as Munster slumped to a 45-10 defeat to the Ospreys in the Pro 12 semi-final at the Liberty Stadium.
The second row – who led Ireland in every game of the RBS 6 Nations - was ruled out after limping off in Munster’s clash with Ulster the previous week.

And with Ireland fly-half Ronan O’Gara only fit enough for a place on the bench, the Irish province were comprehensively outplayed in a 45-10 loss.

Departing Munster head coach Tony McGahan admitted the display from an Ospreys side featuring eight Grand Slam winners was as good as he had seen from the Welsh region.

Rhys Webb – who made his debut during the RBS 6 Nations – was one of five tryscorers, while fly-half Dan Biggar chipped in with a try in part of a 25-point haul.

“I thought the Ospreys were tremendous,” McGahan told walesonline.

“They turned the ball over from us, their set-piece was exemplary and their attack superb.

“Without a doubt it was the best performance I have seen from the Ospreys in my time in Europe.

“It was complete, right across the paddock. It was a very polished display from a very good side.”
