Paul O'Connell will find out this week if he will recover in time for tour to New Zealand

Paul O'Connell will see a specialist this week to determine the extent of his knee injury and whether he will be able to take part in Ireland's summer tour to New Zealand.

The lock, who was Ireland’s captain during their 2012 RBS 6 Nations campaign, hobbled out of Munster’s Pro12 victory over Ulster on Saturday.

And Munster head coach Tony McGahan confirmed it was the same knee that O’Connell injured against France during the Six Nations, which cut his participation in the tournament short.

O’Connell recovered from that injury in time to take part in Munster’s Heineken Cup quarter-final defeat to Ulster but McGahan was at pains to point out that it is a different type of injury.

"It's the same knee, but the injury he had before was more of a cut - this is more of a twist, so we will have to wait and see," said coach Tony McGahan.

O'Connell is almost certain to miss Munster's Pro12 semi-final against the Ospreys on Friday night but on the plus side for Ireland head coach Declan Kidney, Ronan O'Gara has resumed training and is in contention for that game.
