England wing Chris Ashton scored but was later injured as Northampton secured a play-off place with a 42-14 win over Worcester.
On the final day of the regular Premiership season, Saracens-bound Ashton celebrated with a trademark swallow dive in his final appearance in a Saints shirt at Franklin Gardens.

His back injury isn’t feared to be serious enough to keep him out of next week’s semi-final at Harlequins, with Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder confident he will be fit to figure.

England team-mate Ben Foden also went over as the hosts ran in five tries.

Owen Farrell, who had a fine debut RBS 6 Nations campaign for England, kicked four penalties and four conversions as his Saracens side denied Exeter a play-off place with a 40-22 win at Vicarage Road.

Charlie Hodgson also scored for the reigning champions who will face Leicester in the other semi-final.

London Irish’s England-bound attack coach Mike Catt was given a good send-off as his side thrashed Gloucester 52-18 at the Madejski Stadium.

Full-back Delon Armitage scored in his final game for the Exiles ahead of a summer move to French outfit Toulon.

Former England captain Mike Tindall, on his final appearance for Gloucester, set-up the first of Tom Voyce’s tries in reply, before he was later sin-binned in an ill-tempered affair.

Harlequins finished the top of the league with out-of-favour England scrum-half Danny Care diving over the try-line to give them the lead at Sale.

Elsewhere, Newcastle finished bottom despite a win at Wasps and must now wait to see if a promoted Championship side meet the criteria to take their place in the Premiership.
