Cuthbert hat-trick sees departing Blues players off in style

Wales winger Alex Cuthbert grabbed a hat-trick as Cardiff Blues gave their departing stars the perfect send off in a resounding 38-13 victory over Edinburgh in the PRO 12.
With 12 Blues set to leave the Cardiff City Stadium outfit this summer including 2012 RBS 6 Nations winner Gethin Jenkins, the bonus-point victory gave the Welsh region’s prospects for next season a lift.

With Cuthbert, whose future as a Blues player still in the balance next term, and Wales Under-20 international Luke Hamilton also amongst the scorers in the final home game of the season there is still cause for optimism despite failing to make the play-offs.

Also on the scoresheet was Cuthbert’s Grand Slam-winning teammate Lloyd Williams who started the rout on 18 minutes.

Josh Navidi grabbed the sixth and final try for the hosts with a solitary Harry Leonard try the best Heineken Cup semi-finalists Edinburgh could muster.

Elsewhere, Duncan Weir kicked two penalties to help Glasgow Warriors take a giant step towards securing a top four berth after a 13-8 victory at Treviso.

The fly-half, who made his Scotland debut against France in this year’s RBS 6 Nations, was instrumental in a cagey affair at the Stadio Monigo that leaves his side four points clear of Scarlets with one game to play.

DTH van der Merwe scored Warriors’ decisive try late on, cancelling out Brendan Williams’ earlier effort for the Italians.
