Fit-again Clerc back with a bang

Vincent Clerc marked his return from injury with a try as Toulouse bounced back from successive defeats to beat Brive 30-21.
The French winger has been out of action since Les Bleus’ RBS 6 Nations defeat to England last month when he suffered a shoulder injury but showed no ill-effects on his return to the first team.

Fellow French international Clément Poitrenaud was also in good form as he crossed while former All Black Luke McAlister added 20 points from the kicking tee.

On Friday Morgan Parra contributed 11 points in Clermont’s 22-9 win over Montpellier ahead of their European Cup clash with Leinster.

His scrum-half rival Dimitri Yachvili was equally accurate for Biarritz with four penalties in a crucial 22-13 win over Racing-Métro with USA flyer Takudza Ngwenya scoring the Basques’ only try.

Elsewhere a late penalty from Pierre Bernard, who is in contention for a place on Les Bleus’ summer tour to Argentina, gave Castres a 25-25 draw away to Toulon.

The home side had taken a 12-point lead into the break but failed to add to their score as Castres fought back to all-but seal a place in the Top 14 play-offs.

In the remaining matches Bayonne kept their hopes of beating the drop alive with a last-gasp 20-19 success over Lyon, condemning their opponents on the day to ProD2 rugby next season.

Union Bordeaux-Bègles returned to form with a 29-15 win over Agen while Stade Français got the better of a James Hook-led Perpignan side 35-31.
