Laidlaw, who started four of Scotland’s five RBS 6 Nations matches, will make history by being the first man to captain a Scottish side in the semi-final of the competition against Ulster on April 28th.

The 26-year-old set up Mike Blair’s second-minute try with a neat lob which sent Edinburgh on their way to a 19-14 victory before adding 14 points with the boot to confirm his place in Scottish folklore.

But after producing an inspired performance in front of nearly 40,000 Murrayfield spectators Laidlaw doesn’t want the European adventure to end.

He told The Scotsman: “The mood in the dressing room was as good as I’ve experienced. That was one of the best wins of my career to date.

“To take Edinburgh this far in the Heineken Cup is a fantastic achievement and we don’t want to stop here.

“The crowd was absolutely fantastic and we’d like to thank everyone for coming along. It just shows that if Edinburgh are playing these big games there is support there for us, people will come out to watch these big games.

“My guys put in a great shift out there. We were struggling in the first half when reduced to 13 men and having to deal with a great team full of great players.

“But we kept our calm and hung in there. We then jogged off the pitch at the interval, however the Toulouse guys were only walking slowly. They looked tired and that definitely gave us a lift. We knew at that stage we could do it.”
