Jenkins heralds fully deserved third Grand Slam

Wales veteran Gethin Jenkins believes the Grand Slam was just desserts for his side's exertions during the RBS 6 Nations campaign.
Jenkins, 32, - along with Ryan Jones and Adam Jones – claimed his third Grand Slam on Saturday, having already achieved the feat in 2005 and 2008, by helping Wales to a 16-9 victory over France at the Millennium Stadium.

In doing so, Warren Gatland’s side avenged their defeat to Les Bleus at last year’s World Cup while in claiming their third Grand Slams, Jenkins and the two Joneses emulated JPR Williams, Gareth Edwards and Gerald Davies, who also completed a similar hat-trick in the 1970s.

Wales were not at their finest against France and were made to work hard in narrow victories over England and Ireland but Jenkins believes his side were worthy winners.

"It's just great for this group of players," said Jenkins.

"It wasn't the best of games [with] a lot of kicking involved. Our defence stood out and we managed to grind out a win.

"We knew they [France] were going to be good. They've played well all Championship and it was up to us to perform on the day.

"The occasion didn't quite get to us as they would have hoped.

"The atmosphere was unbelievable and it's great for us to win another Grand Slam.

"The coaches give us freedom to go out and play. We're quite a close group [and] the World Cup obviously brought us tighter.”
