Edwards eyes third win to meet Wales Women target
16 March 2012, 1:27 pm
By Sportsbeat
Wales Women coach Rhys Edwards believes his side are perfectly primed to achieve their pre-RBS 6 Nations target of three wins from the campaign ahead of Sunday's clash with France.
Wales began their tournament in impressive fashion, collecting a 20-0 victory over Scotland but then Edwards’ side collapsed to heavy defeats to both England at Twickenham and Ireland in Dublin – ending up without a point in either match.

But last time out, Wales got their campaign back on track with an impressive 30-13 win over Italy in Cardiff and on Sunday only France stand between Edwards’ side and win number three.

"A win is a win as far as we are concerned, especially after the performance against Ireland. It was really important that we put in a performance against Italy and so importantly we got a win," said Edwards.

"We went from one extreme to the other after the Ireland game but it was nice to see that when the chips were down we actually performed.

“We created opportunities – even in defeat against England and Ireland – but we never produced the clinical pass or decision – but against Italy that side of the game was a big focus and to see them doing it was really pleasing.

"We've now picked up two wins in the championship. We always said three was the target. The way we're playing there is no reason why we can't go at France.

“Playing at Cross Keys is a little bit different than playing at the Millennium Stadium - but there is no reason why we can't take confidence from the victory against Italy and give them a run for their money."

And captain Rhian Bowden believes Wales will be full of confidence after their Italian Job.

“The win against Italy will give us a real boost going into the game against France,” she said.

“We needed that win against Italy but the girls know we all have to lift our performance for France as they will provide a totally different proposition. We'll be looking to finish the campaign off with a big win.”
