Laney has point to prove
1 February 2004, 2:55 pm
It is debatable whether anybody will have more to prove to Scotland in this year's RBS 6 Nations than Brendan Laney.
The New Zealand-born centre was omitted from the World Cup squad last year after being fast-tracked into the national side in 2001.

The Edinburgh Gunners star found himself out of favour with then coach Ian McGeechan at precisely the wrong time as the former Lions chief prepared his squad for Australia.

Laney has hit back in spectacular style and new Scotland head coach Matt Williams maintains he has stood out in training sessions for the national team.

Williams said: Brendan has been in impressive form of late.

Hes a very important figure in the squad especially since a lot of senior players have just retired.

He deserves praise for the part he has played both with Edinburgh and Scotland, often in very difficult circumstances.

There is some smart money being placed on the centre taking the captains armband from the retired Bryan Redpath for the RBS 6 Nations opener against Wales in Cardiff on February 14.

Laney has a decent record for his adopted country before his omission from the World Cup squad.

Now hurt pride is set to see him make a mark in this years competition.
