Edwards can't help but praise Halfpenny

Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards insists the performances of full-back Leigh Halfpenny have forced him to break the habit of a lifetime and praise an individual publicly.
Wales remain on course to claim the RBS 6 Nations title and a Grand Slam having already secured the Triple Crown after a narrow 19-12 win against England in Twickenham made it three from three following victory in Ireland and a comfortable home win over Scotland.

The outstanding Halfpenny has been a key factor in their success, with the 23-year-old kicking the match-winning penalty in Dublin, scoring two tries against Scotland among a 22-point haul, and adding another 14 points at Twickenham.

Halfpenny’s involvement at Twickenham wasn’t just with the boot, with the Cardiff Blues star bringing Twickenham and England wing David Strettle to their knees with a try-saving tackle that would have made Edwards proud.

And while Edwards is delighted with the way Wales are playing as a unit – he couldn’t help but single Halfpenny out for special praise.

“As a coach you try not to single out players,” said Edwards, speaking to the Daily Post.

“But I am sorry, I have to single out Leigh Halfpenny because he has been absolutely sensational.

“That tackle at the end against England just showed how conscientious he is about his roles and his jobs. He is a complete professional at the moment.

“Another piece of play summed him up as well.

“When (England fly-half) Owen Farrell chipped over the top, Leigh did a big hit on him, then he was involved in the next tackle and he then ran virtually 50 yards to catch Owen Farrell’s next chip ahead, which would have been a try otherwise.

“That shows what sort of shape he is in.”
