Italy's history girls look for more in Cardiff

Italy women's captain Paola Zangirolami is gunning for a third Azzurre RBS 6 Nations win in a row against the Welsh and knows the prospect of doing so at the Millennium Stadium is a shot at history.

Italy women were the first senior Italian team to score a Championship victory on Welsh soil when they beat the Red Dragons 19-15 in Bridgend in 2010.

They followed that up last year with a 12-8 win in La Spezia before going on to beat Scotland in Edinburgh 26-0 later in the Championship.

Yet inside-centre Zangirolami knows former glories will count for nothing in Cardiff on March 10 and the host side, who beat Scotland 20-0 at Pandy Park in early February, will be roared on by a big home crowd thanks to the game being played straight after the men’s teams.

“It will be highly emotional to play in one of rugby’s iconic stadiums and it will certainly be a fantastic experience that we will all remember,” said Zangirolami, who has won 46 caps for her country.

“To play our first game in the Millennium Stadium is a cause for pride because these are the moments that are few in life.

“Against the Welsh we have always got positive results and I remember in particular the first victory.

“Because of that game we want to repeat it and back up our previous results.”
