The 85-times-capped Bergamasco was ever present for the Azzurri during last year’s Championship and kicked the winning penalty in their historic 22-21 win against the French.
But his lengthy recovery from a shoulder operation in October forced him to miss the opening rounds of this year’s Championship.
And since neither Tobias Botes nor Kris Burton have made the kicking tee their own this year, Bergamasco’s 250 test points mean he’s likely to be handed the duties for Italy’s next match against Wales.
Trevisoflanker Manoa Vosawai and Aironi lock Carlo Del Fava have also been added to the training squad. Fijian-born Vosawai comes in for the suspended Mauro Bergamasco while Del Fava replaces Antonio Pavanello, who drops out through injury.
Leicester Tigers prop Martin Castrogiovanni has also been recalled to the training squad, despite still feeling the effects of a broken rib sustained against England.
“I told the staff I can still feel it but I am better,” Castrogiovanni said.
“I know that for the first match (vs Wales) it will be hard, it’s more likely I will be back for Scotland – as long as I don’t take another knock.
“They know that I will try and the staff want me to meet up with the team even if it’s just to monitor the situation and assess the progress.”
