Edwards puts faith in De Filippo for England women clash
23 February 2012, 5:35 pm
By Sportsbeat
Wales Women's head coach Rhys Edwards is backing teenage centre Rebecca De Filippo to rise to the occasion after naming her in his starting XV for Saturday's RBS 6 Nations clash against England at Twickenham.
De Filippo earned her first cap as a second-half replacement for Philippa Tuttiett in the 20-0 thrashing of Scotland at Cross Keys last weekend and did enough to impress Edwards despite being sin-binned.

The youngest member of the squad turns 18 on Saturday and couldn’t ask for a better birthday present after being handed her first start, and Edwards believes she won’t be overawed by the occasion.

“She is more than capable of coping with the pressure,” said Edwards. “I suppose you could say it is a case of throwing her in the deep end to see if she can sink or swim, but we wouldn't have picked her if we didn't think she was good enough.

“The way she plays suits our game plan to be honest. She possesses great off-loading ability and can do stuff that maybe others can't.”

The Neath Athletic youngster comes in for Tuttiett who drops to the bench in the only change to the lineup, with flanker Lisa Newton ousting Sian Williams as one of the replacements.

Edwards’ side head to Twickenham as underdogs in a role reversal with Warren Gatland’s men but the coach believes they can pull off a shock against the RBS 6 Nations favourites.

“They have a big squad and have made a number of changes to their side but they can afford to do that with the strength in depth they have,” he added.

“However you look at it, it's not going to be easy but if we can improve our finishing off I'm confident we can give it a really good go. If we can implement our game plan, I think we can rattle them.”
