But with Italy making their RBS 6 Nations bow at the Stadio Olimpico he’s ready to chance things more with ball in hand.

“No-one has seen how Italy can attack yet,” Burton told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We can do a lot better in terms of tactics and keeping hold of the ball more.

“This is a positive thing because everyone says we played quite well but it could be a lot better.

“England one week can be down but the next they are up. They are still a physical side that can play close and wide with Foden and Ashton and they are always a danger from the tee.

“They didn’t play well against Scotland but they won. So we must stay aware the whole time.

“It will be hard because it could be like last year but our aim is to not let them play their game but to play ours.”

And Burton isn't alone, with Italy’s backs coach and former scrum-half Alessandro Troncon also calling for Italy to take an attack-minded step up against the reigning champions.

“Perhaps we weren’t very efficient against France,” said the 101-times-capped Troncon.

“At times the logic to our game wasn’t there compared with how we planned it.

“We lacked a clinical edge in the offensive part of the game and attention in the defensive part.

“We certainly need to be more solid and to anticipate the evolution of the attacking phase of the game.”
