Inspired Botha wants to keep England singing

Mouritz Botha credits America singer Lana Del Rey for helping England get their RBS 6 Nations campaign off to a flyer - and insists he is determined to hit the right note again against Italy.
The 30-year-old made his first start – and only his second appearance after coming off the bench during a World Cup warm-up against Wales – for England in the 13-6 win over Scotland.

He has been handed his second start for England’s second RBS 6 Nations clash against the Azzurri and gave an insight into the Red Rose dressing room prior to the announcement.

Botha revealed interim head coach Stuart Lancaster used Del Rey’s debut single Video Games, as well as a montage incorporating the track, to help inspire England to victory at Murrayfield.

It certainly did the job but Saracens lock Botha is adamant it will all count for nothing if England fail show Italy the respect they deserve at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.

“The bond we have created is something that we showed on Saturday and it is building towards something special,” said Botha. “Stuart got it spot on with the build up of emotions.

“That song was playing in the dressing room as you walked in and it was the backing track to a highlights package that had been made for us featuring all of the players.

“It made the hairs stand up – it gave you the feeling you are ready for this. It was a brilliant occasion at Murrayfield and to be facing something like that again will be a brilliant challenge.

“But Italy will be a big battle. They are one of the sides that have made massive strides over the past few years.

“They are not a wooden-spoon team anymore and at home in their new stadium they will be up for the challenge with 70,000 fans behind them.”
