Indeed Scotland have now not scored a try in five of their last six games at home – although Laidlaw did come close only for the television match official to think otherwise.

The Edinburgh captain has now made three appearances for Scotland – all from the bench – but could well be handed his first start when Robinson announces his squad for Wales.

Scotland travel to the Millennium Stadium this Sunday and Laidlaw is adamant a simple look at Edinburgh can help end their try drought, which also incorporates the last four games.

“With Edinburgh we throw the ball about but we don’t just play like the Barbarians. We kick, we pressurise teams and we’re pretty direct,” said Laidlaw.

“We don’t just throw the ball about, although of course we do at times, and that’s how I like to play the game of rugby.

“We are not far off as a nation. We just need to hold some composure and get over the line, hold that little bit more depth and just hold onto the ball at crucial times.

“We created a lot of chances against England and going forward it’s about taking the step over the line and scoring a try.

“I was quite happy with how I played when I came on. I injected a bit of speed into the game and we definitely made some chances when I was on the field.

“I’m quite happy with that. Whether that’s enough, time will tell.”
