Hodgson getting ready for 'second debut'

Charlie Hodgson failed to start a game during Martin Johnson's reign as England team manager - but with Stuart Lancaster now at the helm he is determined for that to be the exception rather than the rule.
The 31-year-old made his Red Rose debut over a decade ago against Romania in 2001in which England, under Sir Clive Woodward, recorded their biggest ever win.

However since that 134-0 win at Twickenham over ten years ago, where he recorded 44 points, Hodgson has gone on to make only 35 further appearances including just five, all from the bench, during Johnson’s reign.

But with Johnson out and Lancaster the interim coach Hodgson has been given a chance to prove his international worth – starting with England’s opening RBS 6 Nations clash with Scotland.

And with a second debut feel about his appearance against the Auld Enemy the Saracens fly-half has vowed to grab the opportunity at Murrayfield on Saturday with both hands.

“It is pleasing just to be back in the squad first and foremost as there have been times when things have gone well and when they haven’t gone well in an England shirt,” said Hodgson.

“It was a case of always working hard and never losing belief in my own ability. The fact that I have gone through those times and come out the other side is a sign of character.

“It does feel like a debut. I feel very proud to be given the opportunity to be involved. I have learned not to look too far ahead and focus on what is going on in the next few days.

“I have tried to improve what is one of the weaknesses of my game, which is defensively, it has improved and I have enjoyed it.

“If I have to spend more time doing that than anything else to make sure it is up to scratch, I can cope with that. Being in a good defensive system at Saracens has helped with that.”
