World Cup skipper Sam Warburton has retained the captaincy for the campaign while Blues rookie wing Harry Robinson has also got the nod.
Five other uncapped faces join Robinson with scrum-half Rhys Webb, centre Ashley Beck along with Scarlets trio Liam Williams, Rhodri Jones and Lou Reed.
The 35-strong squad will be reduced upon their return from a pre-Six Nations training camp in Poland.
Other notable inclusions on the list are French-based trio James Hook, Mike Phillips and Lee Byrne as well as three more who ply their trade across the Severn Bridge, Craig Mitchell, Rhys Gill and Sale Sharks back row Andy Powell.
Those inclusions seem to draw a line under Gatland’s policy of not picking foreign-based stars however there is no such reprieve for Stephen Jones.
The Scarlets fly-half looked to be on his way out after being overlooked for the autumn test with Australia and the Six Nations squad seems to confirm the end for Wales’ most-capped player.
“We have had to strike a balance with this squad, the majority are those players who excelled for Wales during the Rugby World Cup, but are also taking the opportunity to look at one or two youngsters before probably cutting our numbers even further before the start of the RBS 6 Nations,” said Gatland.
“We have kept a couple of older heads and we have injuries, with Alun Wyn Jones, Josh Turnbull, Rob McCusker and Luke Charteris all unavailable to us, but the emphasis on development and planning for the future is there for everyone to see.
“These are exciting times for Welsh rugby, we showed a huge amount of potential at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and we will be working as hard as humanly possible to ensure that we reach our potential in this year’s RBS 6 Nations Championship.”
