Henson has not played since suffering a wrist injury in Wales’ warm-up match against England which ruled him out of the World Cup and has delayed his Blues debut.

But Blues coach Gareth Baber confirmed Henson is very much in the reckoning as the Welsh capital side look to extend their perfect Heineken Cup record at Murrayfield on Friday night.

And despite his reputation for off-field controversy, Baber is adamant the 29-year-old, who has played a key role in Wales’ 2005 and 2008 RBS 6 Nations Grand Slams, has been a model professional during his time at the club.

He said: “In terms of his hand and his wrist, he has recovered from that and is back to where he needs to be.

“He has got a little bit of a niggle in his hamstring. That’s just through training. Boys get them.

“But he is not far away.

“He is certainly in contention for this week. We may possibly have him in the 22.

“And he will then be in our thoughts going forward.

“From my end, he has just been the ultimate professional He attends meetings on time, he’s at the right places when he needs to be, wearing the right kit.

“He’s done his rehab properly. He’s in on the off days when he needs to do the rehab. He’s doing everything he possibly can to get himself back in a position to make a claim for the squad.

“You don’t exist in these environments for as long as he has and with the attention he has had on him if you are not thoroughly professional.”

There is still uncertainty where he will be employed by the Blues when he does eventually make his bow, which if not in the Scottish capital, is almost certain to be in the derby clash with the Dragons.

Dan Parks’ form in the No.10 shirt for the Blues means he is likely to figure in the centres, but Baber is keeping his options open as to where his talents will ultimately be utilised.

“I see him as very versatile,” he said. “Initially I see him as a 12, a second distributor, a second five-eight if you like,” added Baber.

“I know he has eyes on 10, but he has a tough job there at the moment because Dan Parks is playing very well.

“He is controlling the game for us and orchestrating as we need him to do. But Gavin has those qualities to play in two or three positions.

“I am not going to pin myself to any one of those at the moment.

“We are going to see how it goes over the next two or three months and see exactly where he can feature.”
