Adrien Plante will have caught the eye of France coach Philippe St Andre
Planté helps Perpignan past Prato

Adrien Planté pushed his case for a place in France coach Philippe St Andre's first RBS 6 Nations squad with a try-scoring display in Perpignan's crushing 54-20 European Challenge Cup defeat of Cavalieri Prato.

The 26-year-old winger has long been on the fringes of the France squad but seized his moment following the confirmation of the national team’s new coaching set-up in midweek with one of Perpignan’s eight tries.

Romain Taofifenua and Julien Candelon both crossed for two tries, Gilles Bosch, Yoann Vivalda, Nicolas Laharrague completed the scoring with Bosch adding seven conversions.

There was also Challenge Cup success for Wales No.8 Andy Powell and Irish front row Tony Buckley as Sale Sharks triumphed 29-14 at Agen.

Tries from James Gaskell, Marc Jones and Scotland back row Richie Vernon handed Sale a flying start and Luther Burrellwent over to secure the bonus point.

“The defence was very good and the scrum was dominant where I thought Tony Buckley played well again, as did Andy Powell so there were a lot of things to be happy about,” said boss Steve Diamond.

“The preparation was good and we trained well and you play as you train.

“In fact, if we hadn’t had two or three poor refereeing decision we probably would have scored more tries but that is the way it goes.

“Overall, though, it has been a great week for everyone.”

Meanwhile Jimmy Gopperth kicked two second-half penalties to earn Newcastle a 6-3 victory over Toulon at Kingston Park, with England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson relegated to the bench for the French visitors on his return to the North East.
