Moody wants Johnson to stay

Ex-captain Lewis Moody believes Martin Johnson must stay on as manager if England are to have any chance of capturing the World Cup on home soil in 2015.
Moody, who has 71 caps to his name, retired from international rugby following England’s disastrous showing in New Zealand that resulted in a quarter-final exit amid continuing controversies off the field.

Johnson’s contract is up for renewal in December and it remains to be seen whether the RFU will persevere with the former Leicester man, just as they did with Sir Clive Woodward in 1999, before he guided England to World Cup victory in 2003.

Graham Henry, Nick Mallett and Shaun Edwards have all been linked with the job but Moody is adamant Johnson must stay with the 2012 RBS 6 Nations looming on the horizon.

"When you are captain you take it all very personally,” said Moody. "But the most important thing is that there are no knee-jerk reactions. It is essential for me Johnno continues.

"There was certainly a degree of naivety and to allow things to transpire the way they did was very naive and simply wrong.

"That has happened now, it's frustrating for me as a player and someone like Jonny [Wilkinson] who's been around the England set-up for a very long time, especially as it was my last involvement."
