Burns too hot to handle for Sharks

Ex-England U20 fly-half Freddie Burns' 26-point haul helped reigning LV=Cup champions Gloucester exact revenge over Sale at Kingsholm in a 58-27 win.
The 21-year-old kicked 21 points and ran in a late try as the Sharks, who emerged 13-11 winners at Edgeley Park last weekend in the Premiership, collapsed in the final quarter due mainly to their own ill discipline.

Lock James Gaskell along with Scotland internationals prop Alasdair Dickinson and flanker Richie Vernon were all sin-binned as Bryan Redpath’s side ran in 31 unanswered points to seal a comfortable win.

A first-half Lesley Vainikolo try and a wonderful solo effort from Jonny May were followed by tries from skipper Luke Narraway, Scott Lawson, Rory Lawson, Charlie Sharples and Burns.

Sale were level at 27-all after 55 minutes courtesy of tries from Vernon, who was making his debut, Andrew Higgins and Rob Miller, while Nick Macleod kicked 12 points but were made to rue their lack of discipline late on.

Bath inflicted a record-equalling home defeat on the Dragons as they thrashed their Welsh opponents 46-16 at Rodney Parade.

Matt Banahan, returning from World Cup duty with England to earn his 100th Bath cap, winger Tom Biggs and debutant Olly Woodburn all went over in the first-half for the visitors.

Fellow debutant Will Spencer followed suit after the break, while Jack Cuthbert and  Anthony Perenise added further misery for Darren Edwards’ side, who sit tenth in the RaboDirect PRO12 table.

Fly-half Tom Heathcote finished with a haul of 11 points after kicking four conversions and a penalty while Matthew Jones replied with a conversion and three penalties for the Dragons.

But the game was marred by a serious-looking injury to Bath scrum-half Mark McMillan who was taken off the field on a stretcher with a suspected neck injury.

Fellow Rabo side Scarlets fared slightly better against Leicester Tigers, with No 8. Kieran Murphy grabbing two tries in a resounding 31-3 bonus-point victory at Parc y Scarlets.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring early on for Nigel Davies’ side and added a second on 33 minutes in a dominant display.

Flanker Matt Gilbert, winger Liam Williams and fly-half Jordan Williams also crossed  for Scarlets while Williams also kicked two conversions.

Aled Thomas also converted but the best the Tigers could offer was a George Ford penalty in the first half.

Elsewhere, Russian winger Vasily Artemyev scored a hat-trick on his debut as Northampton beat Saracens 36-6 at Franklin's Gardens while Lindsay-Hague’s 84th minute try helped Harlequins maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a 26-19 win over London Irish.

Exeter Chiefs ran in four tries to end Ospreys’ unbeaten start to the season in a 35-9 thrashing, whileTom Arscott’s brace saw Worcester edge past Wasps 20-19. Greg Goosen went one better to secure a hat trick in Newcastle’s 33-3 win over Cardiff Blues.
