Despite failing to reach the last eight for the first time in the tournament’s history, Robinson wants to instil a killer instinct in his side before the 2012 RBS Six Nations in February.

He said: "I have a contract to 2015 and I have the desire to still coach Scotland.

“The way the players have gone about this tournament - the enthusiasm that they've had - has fuelled my desire even more to create a successful Scotland team and it's important now we're able to start the planning now for the Six Nations.

“Everybody is absolutely gut-wrenched about losing the game, but these Scotland players have got to take massive pride away from the way they have carried themselves in this tournament.

“I couldn’t ask any more of them today except for obviously scoring more points than the opposition and we got so close to doing it.”

Scotland had lead 12-3 early in the second half but were made to pay for a lack of ruthlessness as England stormed back to win 16-12.

Chris Paterson and Dan Parks had kicked Scotland to their required advantage before Wilkinson found his range and Chris Ashton’s late try sent Scotland packing.

Robinson added: “England were under huge pressure today, created by a Scotland team playing well but they found a way to win a game of rugby.

“That’s what it’s about and ultimately that’s what we’ve got to be able to learn. These games are cut and thrust, it’s about inches. Missing a restart at 12-3 and suddenly it becomes 12-6, you can’t relieve the pressure that quickly.

“It’s small margins, and obviously everybody will have their opinion about the game, but I was really pleased with how the guys went about it.”
