Johnson opts to call up Waldrom

England coach Martin Johnson has officially called up Leicester back row Thomas Waldrom into his World Cup squad in place of crocked prop Andrew Sheridan.
Waldrom has been standing by in New Zealand since Wednesday but Johnson wanted to bide his time before making a decision until after the Romania clash.

Sheridan injured his left shoulder in the opening game with Argentina but with Nick Easter struggling with a back problem Johnson has opted for the Leicester No. 8.

Prop Matt Stevens is also struggling with an ankle injury to leave the England front-row looking a little bare but Waldrom, 28, has been given the nod.

And with the Kiwi-born back-rower having featured in all three of the Tigers’ opening Premiership clashes Johnson admitted time had run out for him to make his decision.

"Nick is making good progress as is Matt Stevens but with Thomas now out here it makes sense to get him into the squad officially so he can join in with training," said Johnson.

"We also owe it to Leicester to make a decision so that they can plan accordingly without him."
