Nick Easter
Thomas Waldrom is standing by if Nick Easter, above, fails to recover
Johnson hopeful Easter will return

Martin Johnson insists Nick Easter's World Cup is far from over after tipping the England No.8 to win his battle with a back injury.
Easter’s New Zealand adventure seemed to be hanging by a thread after missing the win over Georgia as Johnson was forced to fly in Thomas Waldrom as emergency cover.

Quins’ Easter will not play any part against Romania on Saturday, with James Haskell continuing at No.8 as England look to reduce their penalty count against the Oaks.

England are yet to announce their replacement for injured prop Andrew Sheridan with Waldrom waiting in the wings, but Johnson insists he’s not yet ready to rule out Easter.

“Nick's not had this injury before, it's just one of those where we're hoping he's going to be good to go next week,” said Johnson.

“All the signs are he will be. It looks good but these things are day to day. We've got to (make a decision) after the game.

“I think Nick will be okay. He's desperate to get back and play but we'll see how it progresses over the next 48 hours.”

Haskell has impressed in his role as England’s versatile back row man and while Johnson expects Easter to return, he admits Haskell will be hard to shift from the No.8 shirt.

“[Haskell] came in last week for us at short notice and he's done very well,” said Johnson.

“He's keen to improve and when he's been in the team, he's often covering multiple positions depending on who we have on the bench.”

“At times he's covered all three, so he has to know all those roles and he's done a good job of it - he's playing well and he's a useful player to have with his utility.”
