Chris Paterson will make history against Romania
Robinson shuffles his pack for clash with Romania

Andy Robinson has made eight changes to the Scotland team which will take on Romania in Saturday's World Cup opener in Invercargill.

Following the final World Cup warm-up victory over Italy Chris Paterson returns to the team at full-back as he becomes the first Scot to feature in four World Cups while Ruaridh Jackson takes the reins at fly-half.

Sean Lamont makes his fourth start at inside centre as he pairs up with Joe Ansbro with Max Evans and Simon Danielli on the wings.

And Mike Blair gets the nod at scrum-half at the expense of Chris Cusiter and Rory Lawson, the former covering on the bench.

Meanwhile in the pack Ross Ford will win his 50th cap at hooker alongside Geoff Cross and Allan Jacobsen with Richie Gray and captain Alistair Kellock making up the second row.

And new Sale signing Richie Vernon will benefit from Johnnie Beattie’s omission from the World Cup squad as he lines up at No. 8.

Boss Andy Robinson said: “We have picked a strong side. There is competition for places and we could easily have picked another XV, as we did in the warm-up games.

“As ever, our key objective this weekend is to win the game and thus get a foothold in the tournament. We really respect Romania, who are a young side who are developing together.

“We've trained really well in the last three months and now it's about going out and delivering.”

He added: “I'm delighted for Ross that he will win his 50th cap. He's a great competitor who always works hard on the training pitch and is never content to just get by. His game is about always seeking to improve.”
