Robinson leaves Beattie behind after naming World Cup squad

Andy Robinson has chosen to leave out Johnnie Beattie from Scotland's final squad of 30 for the World Cup in New Zealand.

The No 8, who came to prominence with some impressive performances during the 2010 RBS 6 Nations, missed six months of the season with shoulder injury and has struggled to regain his form.

Sale’s Richie Vernon and Gloucester’s Alasdair Strokosch are the main beneficiaries of Beattie’s omission and are likely to battle it out with Ross Rennie for the final place in the back row alongside regulars Kelly Brown and John Barclay.

Nikki Walker’s late withdrawal due to injury sees Simon Danielli make the squad while Robinson has also gone with five props, with Euan Murray, Moray Low and Geoff Cross all in contention for the tighthead role.

Alastair Kellock will lead the side, as he did during the Six Nations, while Chris Cusiter, Mike Blair and Rory Lawson have all been included at scrum-half.

Head Coach Robinson said: “I want to pay tribute to the dedicated and professional approach of all those in our provisional squad.

“Eight players have been unfortunate to miss out from that squad but that is because of the talent we have been able to assemble in our final 30.

“As a squad we have our values and uppermost among them is to inspire the nation by the way in which we conduct ourselves and through winning performances on the international rugby field.”
