Phillips suspended indefinitely by Wales

Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips has been suspended from international duty with immediate effect.
The 28-year-old, who recently moved to French club Bayonne from Ospreys, is being punished for his public behaviour during an agreed holiday period from pre-World Cup training.

Phillips, capped 55 times, was pictured being held down by security personnel outside a branch of McDonald's in the early hours of Tuesday in Cardiff city centre.

WRU Chief Executive Roger Lewis said: “Mike Phillips is an exceptional player, but there is irrefutable evidence that he was engaged in behaviour which falls below the standards we set.

“It is vitally important that we send out a clear and unambiguous message to one and all concerning our views on matters of this sort.

“Rugby is part of the culture of our nation and we must do all in our power to ensure that the game remains a sport that everyone in Wales can be proud of.”

The WRU say the suspension has been approved by Wales head coach, Warren Gatland, and agreed by the senior squad management team.

Cardiff Blues scrum-half, Lloyd Williams, has been called into the Welsh Rugby World Cup training squad as a replacement and will join the squad on Monday.

Wales have three warm-up games against England and Argentina next month, before the squad is reduced to 30 players on 22 August.

The World Cup begins on 9 September in New Zealand.
