England flanker Tom Wood has been named Aviva Premiership Player of the Year after a standout season for club and country.
Wood joined Northampton from Worcester last summer but wasted no time in making a big impact at Franklin’s Gardens.

The 24-year-old’s fine form was rewarded with his international debut against Wales in the Millennium Stadium before going on to start all of England’s match in the 2011 RBS 6 Nations.

Although he will miss the Saints’ Premiership semi-final against Leicester with a hairline fracture of his right fibula, Wood is line to return to action for the Heineken Cup final.

And even though his contract is not due to expire for another season, that has not stopped Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder from offering him a new two-year contract – a deal Wood was only too happy to accept.

“I've definitely enjoyed my time at the Saints,” said Wood. “It couldn't have gone much better really.

“Working with the players and coaches has been excellent and hopefully this will continue over the next few years.

“I knew I had a challenge to establish myself as a Saints player, especially with the quality players that we have in the back row, and everything else has been a bonus.

“I certainly had no hesitation in signing a new contract, and have no intention of going anywhere else.

“Hopefully we can finish the job this season and then build on that to bring more success to the club in the next few years.”
