Webster to take Wales helm for JWC
3 May 2011, 3:20 pm
By Peter Bryant, Sportsbeat
Former Lions flanker Richard Webster maintains he can't wait to get started after confirming he will take charge of Wales Under-20s for this summer's IRB Junior World Championship.
With a little over a month before the tournament starts on June 10, Webster is poised to announce his 26-man squad as the 13-cap former Wales star takes the reins from Darren Edwards.

The latter has now been permanently appointment as head coach of Newport-Gwent Dragons and a review of the Wales coaching set-up will follow the tournament.

Webster makes his first big decision as head coach hoping he can inspire his chosen players to improve on last year’s seventh-place finish, where Matthew Jarvis played a starring role.

The tournament has provided a launchpad for the likes of Courtney Lawes and Tom Prydie to international rugby in the past and Webster is looking for his new troops to impress on the world stage.

“I’m really looking forward to this challenge,” he said.

“We produced an exciting brand of rugby during the Six Nations, beating Scotland and Italy, and running England and France very close, our most disappointing performance being the draw against Ireland.

“We have Argentina, New Zealand and Italy in our Junior World Championship Pool, all of whom will be tough opposition but we must build on our Six Nations performances in order to do as well as we possibly can in all our matches, developing as many of our young players along the way as possible”.
